ST. CROIX — Liberty VI will begin construction of a fiber-optic network project in the Cotton Valley area this week as the company continues expanding high-speed internet infrastructure across the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Liberty announced that work will start Monday, March 9, in Cotton Valley and Sierra Verde on St. Croix. The construction project is scheduled to run through Tuesday, March 31, and will extend Liberty’s Fiber to the Home network to additional homes and businesses in the area.
Once completed, 238 serviceable homes in the Cotton Valley community will have access to Liberty’s Fiber to the Home broadband service. The project is part of Liberty’s broader effort to expand high-speed internet access across the territory as permits are secured for additional construction phases.
“As we acquire the necessary permits, we are moving forward with our Fiber to the Home construction projects so more locations in the territory can have access to our fiber fast internet,” said Ravindra Maywahlall, general manager of Liberty VI. “We will continue informing VI consumers about the next areas where we will schedule Fiber to the Home construction projects.”
Construction details and traffic impacts
The project will involve installing aerial fiber-optic cables on utility poles and building a concrete pad as part of the network infrastructure. Fiber optic cable will also be extended to the Cotton Valley cell site to increase broadband mobile capacity in the area.
Construction is expected to take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., though the company noted that work hours may change depending on the specific tasks being performed.
Traffic controls and safety equipment will be in place before construction begins. While the work is expected to have minimal traffic impact, residents and motorists traveling through the area may encounter delays due to lane restrictions and partial road closures.
Drivers are being advised to exercise caution, particularly along narrow roadways in the Cotton Valley area.
Liberty VI said it will provide updates on its website regarding when and where construction work will occur across the territory so residents can plan their daily commutes accordingly.
