ST. THOMAS — A dispute over cleaning fish in a kitchen sink ended with a St. Thomas man facing domestic violence-related assault charges after police say a female housemate was stabbed during the confrontation and treated at the hospital for a wound that came close to puncturing her lung.

The incident unfolded Monday afternoon at a Bovoni residence, where officers found the injured woman receiving medical attention and later arrested Alvan Henry Anthony. He appeared in court Tuesday, where probable cause was found to uphold the charges, bail conditions were set, and his next hearing was scheduled for May 15.

Police were called to the Bovoni home Monday afternoon to investigate reports of a stabbing.

When officers arrived, they encountered a woman sitting on the porch with a folding knife hanging from her clothing near a laceration to her upper right torso. She was being treated at the time by an emergency medical technician and was later taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police also encountered Alvan Henry Anthony, who was initially detained. Officers noted that he had minor lacerations on the fingers of his left hand.

According to police, a bystander told officers that the injured woman had identified Anthony as the person who attacked her.

Anthony told police that he had been outside in the backyard cleaning fish for dinner and then moved to the kitchen sink to rinse them off. The woman, who had reportedly been living in the home for several months, approached him and began arguing about him bringing the fish into the house.

He told police that the woman pushed him into a glass table, and that he pushed her back into the same table, which broke on impact.

After she got back up, Anthony said the two entered into a stand-off. During that encounter, he told police that he removed his pocket knife, unfolded it, pointed the blade at her, and told her to leave him alone.

Police say Anthony admitted placing the blade of the knife next to the woman’s body, but said he did not know what happened next because he was extremely angry. He did not admit to stabbing her and also told officers he did not know how his fingers were cut.

Anthony reportedly said that a neighbor heard the disturbance and came over to calm him down. He claimed that afterward, he and the woman began to reconcile and discuss what had caused the fight.

When police later spoke to the woman at the hospital, she confirmed that the argument started because she did not want Anthony cleaning fish at the kitchen sink. She told officers that he pushed her and that she was “pretty sure” he had stabbed her with a little knife.

An emergency room physician told police that the knife caused a two-and-a-half-inch wound and came just short of puncturing the woman’s lung.

Anthony was arrested and charged with third-degree assault as a crime of domestic violence, possession of a dangerous weapon during a crime of violence, and disturbance of the peace.

He was remanded into custody pending his advice of rights hearing, which took place Tuesday before Magistrate Simone VanHolten-Turnbull. Probable cause was found to uphold the charges against him.

Anthony was allowed to post 15 percent of his $15,000 bail in cash to secure his release, with the remaining balance signed as an unsecured bond. If released, he will be required to report in person to the probation office twice a week and comply with the court’s standard bail conditions.

His next court appearance is scheduled for May 15.
